Navigating Imposter Syndrome
What is imposter syndrome?
According to psychology today, “people who struggle with imposter syndrome believe that they are undeserving of their achievements and the high esteem in which they are, in fact, generally held.” “They feel that they aren’t as competent or intelligent as others may think, and that soon enough people will discover the truth about them.”
When reflecting on the imposter syndrome experience, I consider its connection to the industry I aspire to join in the future. After spending my summers working in Outer Banks, North Carolina, my enthusiasm for surf wear grew. Despite my deep passion for surf wear and the sport of surfing as a whole, I couldn't shake the feeling that I lacked knowledge about the physical aspects of the sport. I think that was the precise moment when the imposter syndrome started to seep in. I started to doubt my capabilities moving forward in such a dynamic industry because of my perceived lack of knowledge. After contemplating my imposter syndrome for an extended period, I started to view it from a different perspective. It escaped my notice that, despite not growing up by the ocean, learning to surf early on, or owning a surfboard, my current position rendered me uniquely qualified due to my fresh perspective. The absence of biases or preconceived notions from my upbringing made it easier for me to approach everything with a new and unbiased set of eyes.
How to overcome imposter syndrome?
To continue advancing in the surf wear industry and nurturing my passion, I had to find a way to overcome my imposter syndrome. Successfully overcoming imposter syndrome required a shift in my perspective regarding my capabilities. Frequently, I experienced a sense of not fitting in, making it imperative that I prioritize the efforts I put into acquiring industry knowledge. I dedicated myself to delving deeper into understanding the surf wear industry. This involved watching surf movies from as far back as the 90s, researching different surf brands, and familiarizing myself with the professional surfers who have shaped the industry into what it is today. The more I began to share my passion of surf wear with my peers the more I gained new perspective on how I could market myself to fit into the industry.
